Everyone runs the 4.4KM qualifier. There are two categories, Elite Category and Open Category, and each is scored separately for men and women. The fastest six in each of those four groups come back to the line for the Grand Final — 24 finalists in total. The final is a single lap of the same circuit. Those 24 are then split into two races: the Women's Grand Final runs first, the Men's Grand Final second. Three races, one night.
Two categories run the same race on the same circuit. Elite Category is for competitive runners chasing a time; Open Category is for everyone else. You pick your category when you register. Each category is scored separately for men and women, so there are four results tables: Elite Category Men, Elite Category Women, Open Category Men, Open Category Women. The fastest six in each table advance to the Grand Final — 24 finalists.
